A faulty or aging HVAC system can cause problems for homes such as rising energy bills and poor indoor air quality. Not sure if it’s time to replace your air conditioner?
Here are eight indicators that it’s time to upgrade your HVAC system.
1. Your air conditioning system is more than ten years old.
When did you get your air conditioning system? According to the Department of Energy, households should update their HVAC system every 10 to 15 years. Modern air conditioners are long-lasting, but their key components begin to deteriorate after around ten years, depending on how frequently you use and service them.
AC units that are more than 10 years old are also likely to use R-22 as a refrigerant. This form of freon is not only obsolete, but also hazardous to the environment. Upgrading to a modern unit will lower your carbon impact while also lowering your monthly energy expenditures.
2. Repairs are more than half the price of a new air conditioner.
If you’re debating whether to repair or replace your current system, and it’s more than a decade old, a new system will be a superior investment. All air conditioning systems will need repairs from time to time, but if the cost of the repair is more than half the cost of a new AC, it is better to get a new one.
3. Your energy bills continue to rise.
While your energy prices will vary seasonally, bills from the same month in successive years should be generally consistent. High energy expenditures are another clue that your HVAC system should be replaced or serviced. The effectiveness of heating and cooling systems tends to deteriorate as they age. This is especially true for individuals who do not have their systems serviced at least once or twice a year.
